SMITH, Sr., Mr. Thomas L.

Mr. Thomas L. Smith, Sr. (aka Mr. Big Stuff, Sonny Kitchens, or Pops), age 83, of Delray Beach, Florida passed away quietly on Monday, March 24, 2014 at Bethesda Memorial Hospital with his family at his side. Thomas was born to the late Mr. Thomas J. Smith and Mrs. Myrtle McMillan Smith on October 23, 1930 in Mobile, Alabama. Thomas was nine years old when his family relocated to Delray Beach, FL. to live with his uncle and aunt, Reverend F.D. Kitchens and Mrs. Eula Mae McMillan Kitchens. When he was of age, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country as a military police officer during the Korean War. In 1958 Thomas married the love of his life, Ruth Mitchell of Delray Beach, FL. and together they were blessed with three lovely children, Pamela, Thomas Jr. (aka Boot) and Willie (aka Boogie). Thomas became a licensed contractor and founded Smith Concrete & Construction where he experienced great success for many years throughout South Florida. Over the years he was very active in his community, showing love and support for the Delray Rocks Football Program, the annual Roots Cultural Festival, and the Delray Little League Baseball Organization. He was also a 33rd Degree Mason at the Prince Hall Lodge in Deerfield Beach, FL and was a member of the dynamic gospel singing group, The Silver Trumpets. Thomas was an avid Harley-Davidson motorcycle enthusiast for many years and became well known as "Mr. Big Stuff" for the decked-out electric blue Harley he rode with pride. During his retirement years, he kept active by detailing cars, selling watermelons and fishing. A dedicated family man, Thomas was instrumental in rearing and encouraging his children and grandchildren. He was dearly loved by all of his family and friends. He will be sorely missed, but his legacy of love lives on in every life he touched. Thomas is preceded in death by his stepmother Mrs. Annie Smith, of Summerland, AL and two brothers, Mr. Arthur (Arlene K.) Lee Smith, Sr. of Delray Beach, FL. and Mr. Kenny Smith of Mobile, AL.
