Obituary Condolences

JULY 19, 1925 TO JUNE 13, 2014

Polly Thorndike Schmutz, 88, a 60 year resident of the San Gabriel Valley passed away peacefully June 13 of complications of Alzheimer's disease. Born Sarah Scheiblein Wiegel in Baltimore, Maryland to Anthony and Sarah Wiegel, she was nicknamed Polly by her grandfather, and later became Polly Thorndike when adopted by her step-father.

In 1938 the family, mother, grandmother, Polly and two sisters, moved to Long Beach, California. Grandmother Julie ran their home while mother Sarah went to work at Proctor and Gamble packing Ivory soap to support the family of five woman. Polly graduated from Long Beach Jordan High School and completed three years at UCLA, working a night shift at a mortuary to support herself. She always regretted not earning her degree in psychology. During WWII Polly volunteered regularly at the USO in Los Angeles. In 1946 Polly married Jesse A Duffy, and with their daughter, moved to Duarte. Polly and Jess divorced in 1963.

Polly married Dr. Milton Schmutz in 1965. They lived in San Dimas and Bradbury and were active in horse breeding and racing at Santa Anita and with the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association. After they divorced, Polly moved to her beautiful condo in Arcadia where she lived for 30 years.

She worked at MAD (Monrovia, Arcadia, Duarte) High School and then began her 35 year career with So Cal Gas Company as a customer service rep in the Pasadena office. At retirement she was an executive, head of Travel in Los Angeles. After retiring Polly became an active volunteer for the Arcadia C of C and later a board member. She served on the Tournament of Roses committee of Arcadia, working her way up to Chairperson in 1999. She was also active in the Alpha Auxiliary of Methodist Hospital and well known in the community.

She will be remembered as a vivacious lady, loyal friend, devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Polly is survived by daughter Michael Snyder (Dale), grand children Todd Snyder and Erin Vainoris (Pete), g-granddaughters Kate and Avery Vainoris, sisters Fredi Emley, Judy Exley, and their families. Predeceased by her parents, beloved granddaughter Brooke Shannon Snyder (2002) and infant granddaughter Rachel Holly Snyder (1973).
Her family and friends will hold a private "Celebration of Polly's Life."
