Robert (Bob) Maurice Lansford, a long-time resident of Pasadena, California, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on August 26, 2014.
Born on February 9, 1938 in Urbana, Illinois, he was the son of Wallace Monroe Lansford and Nettie Ione Smythe. He leaves behind his wife Margie; his daughter Elizabeth Werner and family (husband Todd, daughter Laura and
son Wyatt) of Peoria, AZ; his son Robert and family (wife Karina, daughters Melinda, Emily, and Darcy) of Pasadena; son William of Pasadena; and sister Mariella Lansford of Champaign, IL.
Robert grew up in Champaign, Illinois, graduating in 1956 from Champaign High School, where he played in the dance band and on the tennis team. He went on to attend the University of Illinois, where he played in the Concert
Band, Marching Illini Band and on the Varsity Tennis team. He helped to design, build and program Illiac I, II, the University's first computers. He graduated in Engineering Physics: B.S. in 1960, M.A. 1961 and Ph.D. in 1967. His university honoraries included Tomahawk, Sigma Tau, Phi Ea Sigma, and the Tribe of Illini, and he also served as President of the Physics Society.
He married Mary Marguerite (Margie) Ehler on July 22, 1962. They moved to Pasadena, California, in 1969, where he worked for Burroughs and Xerox. He later joined IBM as a Senior Software Engineer. Always a tennis player, he assisted with the LaSalle Tennis Team.
His grandchildren were the joy of his life!
