Joseph Arthur Kopenhafer, 91, passed away Thursday, January 2, 2014. Joe was born September 7, 1922, in Elroy, WI., the oldest son of Harley and Rose Kopenhafer. He was a tech sergeant in WWII. While training in Texas, he met Betty Lou Ginnochio, whom he married and who became his life-partner of 66 years, until her passing in 2012. During his service in Germany, he was awarded several commendations, including the Purple Heart. After the war, he earned a degree from University of Wisconsin in dairy science, followed by several positions with the dairy industry. In 1965, he moved his family to Euless, Texas, where they lived until 2012. Joe then moved to Windsong Village in Pearland to be close to his youngest son and his family. While in Euless, he was actively involved in church and community programs, helping their four sons attain the rank of Eagle Scout. Joe was an avid gunsmith and wood carver and developed many friendships in those clubs. His parents, two of his six siblings and a son, Jay, preceded him in death. Survivors include his siblings: John E. Kopenhafer (Laurie), Rosemary Pliner, Elizabeth O'Reskie, and James Kopenhafer (Linda); sons: Jim (Fran), Tom (Donna), Mark (Karen) and Gerry; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nephews, nieces and a host of friends. A memorial Mass will be held at St. Helen Catholic Church, Pearland, Texas at a time to be announced. Family and friends will visit in the foyer of the church prior to the Mass.
