Dr. J. Marvin Pollard Sr. passed away June 30, 2014, in Lewisville, Texas, at the age of 89.
A worship service celebrating his life will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Denton, Texas.
Marvin was a professional choir director and singer for over 60 years. He touched countless lives with the gift of song and inspired all of his children to pursue degrees in music education.
Born in Pharr, Texas, Marvin served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was an active Texas music educator, directing choirs in the Rio Grande Valley and serving as secretary of the Texas Choral Directors Association.
He married Nancy Pollard on June 1, 1964.
The family moved north, where he instructed at the University of Wisconsin, Parkside, and in 1972 became choir director at Peninsula College in Port Angeles.
He was named chairman of the Humanities Department there and directed both the Port Angeles and Port Townsend community choruses, the Port Angeles Light Opera Association chorus and numerous church choirs.
He was committed to continuing education, earning his bachelor's, master's and doctorate (Ed.D.) degrees from North Texas State University (now UNT).
In 1986, he and Nancy returned to Texas. They lived in Houston, Mount Enterprise and the Denton area, teaching and performing with various groups, including the Denton Bach Society.
He became a resident of Sterling House in 2011 and continued to lead musical activities there.
A longtime Rotarian, Marvin was voted president of the Henderson chapter, where he was also named Rotarian of the Year, and remained a devoted member of Rotary Denton South until his passing.
Marvin was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy, in 2009 and brother Henry Shelby Pollard in 2012.
He is survived by his sister, Dorothy P. Adkins; his brother and sister-in-law Bill and Margie Pollard; son and daughter-in-law John and Angela Pollard; son Brian Pollard; daughter and son-in-law Valerie and Sean Aja; grandchildren Reagan and Rachel Pollard; grandchildren Timothy and Shelby Aja; stepgrandchild David Pierce; cousins Jeff Davis and family; and many nephews and nieces to whom he was a beloved uncle.
