Albert Lee Gosse


Albert Lee Gosse died August 1, 2014 at Sacred Heart Hospital after a brief illness. He was born in Westgate, Iowa on October 8, 1931. His parents moved to Waterloo, Iowa after his father was employed by John Deere. He was raised in the Lutheran Faith and graduated from East High School in 1949.

Soon after he joined the U.S. Navy and after Boot Camp was ordered to the Naval "A" School of Photography at NAS Pensacola. After graduating in June, 1950 he was sent to be the Flag Photographer on the U.S.S. Salem. Then he was chosen to be the Official Photographer for a midshipman cruise to Ireland on the U.S.S. Macon. His last duty assignment was on the U.S.S. Mississippi where he photographed the first successful sea to air launch of the Mk 1Terrier Missile System.

After being Honorably Discharged from the Navy in 1953, he was immediately hired by Vitro Corp. of America at Eglin AFB, Florida to help establish their new Photo Ops Division in the Research and Development of Weapons Laboratory. He retired in 1998 as a High Speed Photographic Engineer, Supervisor and Mission Coordinator with 45 years of service with Vitro.

In his younger days he was Cub Master of Pack 16 at NAS Ellyson Field, Assistant Scout Master of Troop 3 BSA. He volunteered at the Roy Hyatt Environmental Studies Center. Was a member of the Pensacola and Mobile Rock Clubs. His hobbies were fishing, Rock and Fossil collecting, gardening, and he enjoyed NASCAR.

He was preceeded in death by his parents, August H. and Florence Gosse. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou (Monroe) Gosse. On December 24, 1950 they married in the Ensley Methodist Church. She was his Beloved Soulmate of 63 years. His son, Robert H. Gosse and Pamela, of Pensacola, Florida; his loving grandchildren, Robert N. Gosse and Jessica, of Deltona, Florida, Kelly Marie (Gosse) Wooten and Jerry, of Lee, Florida, Alexander Lee Gosse, of Pensacola, Florida; his great grandchildren, Jennifer Gosse, Robert L. Gosse, Jocelynn, Casey, Aluria Wooten and Jaelyn Clark.

He was also survived by his sister, Dolores (Gosse) Karr and Marvin, of Rudd, Iowa; his nieces,Vickie (Karr) Douglas and John, of Bondurant, Iowa, Janice (Karr) Hedrick, of Rudd, Iowa; his aunt, Wally Wolfe, of Oelwein, Iowa and special nephew by marriage, Charles Askergreen and Sharon, of Florence, Oregon.

Al was a modest and honorable man, never one to boast about his accomplishments, which were many. He was a great father, a devoted husband, a loving grandparent and loyal friend. He was the calming center of our family. We will love him forever.

Graveside service will be held at 1:15 p.m., Thursday, August 14, 2014 at Barrancas National Cemetery with Chaplain Ken Griffin officiating.
