Elizabeth "Betsy" Mattern, 65, of Pensacola passed away on October 9, 2013.
Betsy was born to the late Raymond and Dorothy Bambach in February of 1948 in Huntsville, AL. She graduated from Escambia High School in 1966, and received a BA in Education and a MA in Reading from the University of West Florida.
Betsy was an elementary and high school teacher for Escambia County for 26 years until she retired in 2003. She was a highly regarded Reading teacher known for her dedication to her students. She was passionate about growing her students' love of reading, and engaging them in fun and creative lessons. She was honored with the PTA Teacher of the Year Award for Escambia County in 1993.
Betsy will be especially remembered for her love of music, and a good joke or a bad pun; her kind and generous nature; and her world famous homemade chocolate chip cookies, the best ever.
Survivors include her husband, James Mattern; and four children, Rod Bish of Pensacola, Daryl Bish of Gainesville, James Mattern, Jr. of Niceville, and Steven Mattern of Pensacola. She is also survived by six grandchildren and three siblings, Mary Bambach of Pensacola, Patricia Ezell of Atlanta, GA, and William Bambach of Maryville.
Trahan Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Friday, October 25, 2013 at the Cokesbury Church, Summit Campus, 3300 Summit Blvd., Pensacola, FL. Private burial will be held at a later date. Relatives and friends are welcome at the memorial service.
