Ernest Kelly, Sr., 88, resident of Pensacola, Florida, passed away February 18, 2014.

Ernest was born on February 28, 1925 in Pineapple, AL to the union of Annie Belle and Morland Kelly. At the age of two, Ernest and his family relocated to Pensacola, Florida where he has been a life long resident. His education began in Escambia county at his beloved church home New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. He later attended Booker T. Washington High School. Ernest was then drafted into the United States Navy where he served faithfully during World War II. After being honorably discharged, he pursued his love for baseball through his semi-professional baseball career. As a player in the Negro Baseball League, he played for the Light Crust Doughboys and the Pensacola Seagulls as shortstop. Always having a strong work ethic, Ernest started his occupational endeavors at Cudahy Packing Company and Escambia Bay Chemical Company. He is most fondly remembered for the over 30 years of service he provided as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Annie Belle and Morland Kelly; two sons, Larry Kelly and Marvin Kelly.

Survivors include his wife, Novella; three children, Alvin (Catherine) Kelly, Dr. Ernest (Ursula) Kelly, Jr., of Alexandria, LA, and Kimberly (Kismet) Rideau, also of Pensacola, FL; 9 grandchildren, Santoria, Pretoria, Chuncy, Allyn, Ernest III, Edward, Marquis, Kyndall, and Kimora; 7 great grandchildren; one special brother-in-law that was raised as a son, Bufus (Janet) Gammons; and a host of relatives and friends.
