1917 - 2013

World War II war hero dies!

Milton Meisels was born in New York City, New York in May 1917 to Gertrude and Samuel Meisels employee of the Federal Power Commission in Wash DC .

Milton grew up in Milwaukee Wisconsin and Washington DC and went to the University of Wisconsin class of 1938 where he was on the varsity football team, the goalie of the soccer team and wrote for the Daily Cardinal the school newspaper as sports and night editor and then went to the University of Chicago 1939 for a degree in accounting.

In 1942 he joined the US Army as a Private and went to field artillery officer candidate school and was trained as forward observer artillery 1189. Engaged as a tank navigator he crossed into Germany and earned a Purple Heart, Silver Star and Bronze Medal in battles including the Battle of the Ardennes. He became a First Lt.

Milton was blown up out of a tank in Germany and went back into the tank wounded to put out the tank fire and saved the other soldiers in the tank, winning the Purple Heart.

After the Battle in Ardennes Lt Meisels was a POW in Germany and was released at the end of the war, 6 Nov 1945. His army discontinuance was 28 Feb 1946.

After the war Milton moved to Washington DC to his parent's home until he met artist Ethel Kipnes at a club party. They married in 1954 and Milton went on the work for the US Government in the IRS until he became head of the Overseas division. They lived in Chevy Chase Md. for 54 years. He was president of the IRS Tennis club and also owned a condo in Ft Lauderdale, Florida after Milton retired from the IRS in 1982.

Milton leaves his wife painter, Ethel Kipnes, 93, and step daughter Vicky Tiel Hamilton, step children, Rex and Richard Berkeley, brother Henry Meisels, nephews Ari and Asher Meisels, nieces Orly and Margot Meisels.

In 2009 Milton and Ethel Meisels moved to Baker, Florida where they lived their last years with their nurse, DeLisa Williams at the farm of his step daughter, on their Escambia Farms Fl. home enjoying the peaceful sweet life of the Blackwater River Forrest after a life entirely served working for the United States Government in Washington DC .

Graveside Services with military honors will be held at 11:45 AM on Tuesday, December 24, 2013, at Barrancas National Cemetery, Pensacola, FL.
