Notice Condolences

EDWIN HAMPTON, II, of of Brackney, PA died peacefully in his home at Camp Susquehannock on February 15, 2014. He enjoyed over five decades as an educator and camp director. Mr. Shafer was born in Montrose, PA in 1922 to George C. "King" Shafer, who founded Camp Susquehannock in 1905, and his wife Margaret Keyser MacIntire of Phila., PA. Ed grew up in the Philadelphia area and was a graduate of The Haverford School, (Haverford, PA) Class of 1940 as well as Princeton University, (Princeton, NJ), Class of 1944. In addition, Corporal Shafer spent 18 months stationed in Italy during World War II in the 15th Army Air Force (451st Bomb Group.)
Ed received a Masters in Education in 1948 from Columbia University Teachers College. He taught at Trinity School in New York City (1949-1952) and married Margaret Anne Dexter of Westborough, MA.
In 1959 Ed and his brother followed their father in becoming the Directors of Camp Susquehannock in Brackney, PA.
Ed is survived by his wife Anne of 61 years, his brother George C. Shafer, Jr. (Bryn Mawr, PA), and is predeceased by his sister Margaret Shafer Saunders (Chevy Chase, MD) and his son-in-law R. Burton Hihn (Holtwood, PA.) He is also survived by his children; son Edwin H. Shafer, Jr (Haverford, PA) and his wife Cannie C. Shafer and their children Frances G. Shafer, Blake B. Shafer; son Allan D. Shafer (Honeoye Falls, NY) and his wife Deborah B. Shafer and their children Brandon B. Shafer, Emily A. Shafer, Sarah E. Shafer; and daughter Mary C. Hihn (Holtwood, PA) and her son Ian H. Hihn, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service is planned for Saturday, February 22nd at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Montrose, PA (1pm.) In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in Ed Shafer's name to the Scholarship Fund of Camp Susquehannock. (att: Camp Susquehannock Scholarship Fund, 2308 Tripp Lake Road, Brackney,PA 18812)
