LEWIS A., 92, resident of Tampa, FL, died Nov. 18, 2013. Born in Atlantic City, NJ on July 31, 1921, son of Mary (Silverstein) and Joseph Barness, he was raised in Warrington, PA. He was preceded in death by first wife, Elaine (Berger) Barness and brother, Herbert Israel Barness. He graduated from Harvard College (1941) and Harvard Medical School (1943) and served as Captain in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was professor of pediatrics at University of Pennsylvania School of Medi-cine from 1950-1972, and founding Chairman of Depart-ment of Pediatrics at Univer-sity of South Florida College of Medicine from 1972-1988. A career filled with numerous professional accolades including the prestigious John Howland Medal from American Pediatrics Society, he was a principled, dedicated, and loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, physician, teacher, and friend. He is survived by his wife, Enid Gilbert-Barness, two daughters, Carol Barness, Laura Barness, son Joseph Barness, four stepdaughters, five grandchildren, and eleven stepgrandchildren.
Funeral Services were held at Congregation Schaarai Zedek, Tampa, FL on Nov. 20, 2013.
