Virginia Beach - Mamie Alice Gary, 81, passed away on June 29, 2014. The oldest of nine children, she was born on Feb. 5, 1933 in China Grove, NC to the late Fred and Lucille Faggart. She was affectionately known as "Boodle" to her North Carolina family.
Alice was serving as a Yeoman in the Navy during the Korean War when she met her husband. She then worked as a bookkeeper and was a supportive Navy wife. She was a member of Nimmo United Methodist church. Alice liked to travel with her husband annually to attend the USS Columbia WWII reunions. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren and play board games with her family.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard M. Gary; brothers Tommy, Jerry, and Brownie Faggart; and, nephew Marty Faggart.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Rena Plaatsman and her husband Jim; step-sons, Richard Gary Jr. and his wife Mary and George Gary; grandchildren, Adam Hembree, Jared Plaatsman, Margie O'Connell, and Richard Gary III and his wife Maribeth; great-grandchildren, Erica, Derek, Caylin and Bryce; brothers, Jim Faggart and George Faggart and his wife Fran; sisters, Patsy Martell and her husband Charles, Glenda Campbell and her husband Woody, and Cathy Bost and her significant other Johnny; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the ICU staff of Sentara Princess Anne Hospital for their tender love and care.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home. A service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, July 3, 2014 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the
