1923 - 2013 | Obituary Condolences
Arthur W. Lightbody
Portsmouth - Arthur W. "Bill" Lightbody, 90, of Spring Hill, Fla., died May 3, 2013.
Mr. Lightbody was born in Macon, Georgia and grew up in Jacksonville, Fla. As a young man he traveled to Portsmouth, Va. to work in the Seaboard Railroad car shop before he was drafted into the U.S. Army. During World War II, he saw action in France and Germany. He was awarded three bronze stars and in only two and one half years he was promoted to Master Sergeant on the battlefield. He separated from the Army in 1946 and went back to work for the Seaboard RR and earned his Carman Apprenticeship. After retiring from the railroad, Bill moved to Spring Hill, Florida with his wife in December of 1987. He was a dedicated Servant of the Lord all his life and performed many duties for the church wherever he lived. He was a kind and gentle man who will be terribly missed by all who knew him.
He was predeceased by his parents, Lawrence and Sally Lightbody; three brothers, Frank Lightbody (Ruby), Lawrence Lightbody (Dorothy), Albert Lightbody (Violet); and sister, Maxine Lovelady. He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Jean Owens Lightbody; and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves many dear friends, neighbors and caregivers who became his dear friends and companions.
A graveside funeral with U.S. Army honors will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 10, in Oak Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth. Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is handling local arrangements. Condolences may be registered at www.bwfosterfuneralhome.com.
