Basil J. Charleton
Norfolk - Commander Basil Junior Charleton, died March 11, 2013.
He was born to Basil and Ina Faye Charlton in Belle Valley, Ohio, on August 4, 1921. He attended Ohio State University prior to entering the Navy at the beginning of World War II. As a Navy pilot, he was one of the first to land at night on the original carrier decks. He served in the Navy in various billets for 29 years.
His joy was hunting and fishing which he began as a boy by providing rabbit, etc. for the family table. Commander Charleton was an active member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church.
He was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Elizabeth Gerko Charleton in 1992 and his son, James Harry Charleton in 2008. He is survived by two daughters, Fay Hopkins of Norfolk and Elizabeth Cole of Salem, VA and his special friend, Emily Kircheval.
Commander Charleton's service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, March 15, 2013, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel by The Rev. Harry Griffith, Pastor of Our Saviour Lutheran Church. Reception will follow at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Our Saviour Lutheran Church.
