Virginia Beach - Dolores Ann Burke died March 24, 2014, in a local hospital. She was a native of Cleveland, Ohio, born in 1933 on Valentine's Day to Carl Elmer Ryser and Catherine Meder Ryser. Her death came less than a month before celebrating her 59th anniversary of marriage to Joseph R. Burke.
Dolores was a respected appraiser of fine art and decorative arts. She earned a Master of Fine Arts at Ohio State University after completing undergraduate work at Kent State University. She began her career as an appraiser in 1968 and continued her education by regular attendance at symposia and seminars, membership in professional and cultural organizations and fondness for research. She was a lifelong student who enjoyed sharing her enthusiasm with others. She founded Tidewater Antiques Arts Association in 1982, soon after moving to Virginia Beach from Falls Church, VA. Long after declining health kept her from attending the monthly meetings, Dolores continued as program chairman. Her friendships with curators, conservators, scholars and artists made for a distinguished list of invitees.
Besides her husband Joe, survivors include brother-in-law John J. Burke of Atascadero, California, and his six children; sister-in-law Agnes Burke of Lakewood, Ohio; and cousins in Ohio and Louisiana.
A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m., Saturday, April 5, at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 5345 Virginia Beach Boulevard. Friends wishing to make a donation in Dolores' name may send it to the Virginia Beach SPCA, 3040 Holland Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23453.
