Donald H. Rhodes

Virginia Beach - The Honorable, Donald Henry Rhodes, 80, passed away peacefully at home on December 21, 2013. Mr. Rhodes was the son of the late E.C. Rhodes of Lexington, NC and Ivy Mae Harris Rhodes of Mecklenburg County, VA. He was a graduate of Maury High School, class of 1951. He was also a graduate of the University of Virginia with a B.S. in Education, class of 1955 then he held an Assistantship at Penn State University from 1955-1956. He was field Staff for the Easter Seal Society of Virginia from 1956-1958. He then went back to UVA and graduated from UVA Law School in 1961. He had a private law practice from 1961 to 1986 and then again from 1990-2003. He served on the Virginia Beach City Council from 1970-1973 and also served the city as Mayor from 1970-1972. He was on the Virginia Beach Board of Zoning Appeals from 1967-1970, VA House of Delegates from 1974-1976. He was a Judge in the Virginia Beach General District Court from 1986-1989. He was a member of the Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club. The Past President of the Princess Anne Ruritan Club, Charter member and Past President of the Virginia Beach Sertoma Club, and also the Past President of the Thalia Civic League. He was a former member of the Norfolk Boat Club, and a former member of the Chestertown, MD hunt club. A life member of the UVA Alumni Association, and a former member of the Park Place Baptist Church in Norfolk. He was also a member of the Phi Kappa Psi Social Fraternity and the Delta Theta Phi Legal Fraternity.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Anna Margaret Young Rhodes, two sons, Donald Rhodes, Jr. of Wintergreen, VA, and Chester Rhodes and his wife Brigid of Charlottesville, VA, and four grandchildren, Emma, Isabelle, Don, III, and Wyatt.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday December 26, 2013 in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Rd Chapel. A funeral service will be held in Virginia Beach United Methodist Church on Friday at 12:00 noon. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk.
