Virginia Beach - Captain Donald T. Cannell USN (RET), passed away June 23, 2013 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Don was born in Morning Sun, Iowa to Donald Smith Cannell, and Rachel Tipton Cannell, and grew up in Toluca and Monmouth, Illinois. He attended the University of Illinois, was then selected to attend the US Naval Academy, and graduated with the Class of 1953. He was pre-deceased by his parents, brother Raymond, and sister Mary Faye. He is survived by his wife Audre P. Cannell, and sister, Martha Pindell of Quincy, Illinois.
Don had a very successful 30 year career as a Surface Warfare Officer. He served 16 years at sea, commanding four ships, and a Destroyer Squadron. Among his shore assignments he commanded Tactical Training Group, Atlantic. While in the Navy, Don received an MBA from Harvard University, and a Masters in Marine Affairs from the University of Rhode Island. Upon retiring in 1983, he and Audre decided to remain in Virginia Beach, and joined Bayside Presbyterian Church where he became very active in the life of the church. He was the Church Treasurer, served three, three-year terms as an active ordained Elder, represented his church at the Presbytery, and Synod level, and was elected Elder Emeritus.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 29, at Bayside Presbyterian Church. Don will be interred in the Bayside Presbyterian Church Columbarium at a later date. Arrangements are by Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel. Memorials may be made to Bayside Presbyterian Church in memory of Don Cannell.
