Virginia Beach - Douglas Burgsteiner, 90, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 13 in his Virginia Beach home.
Born in Guyton, GA, he was a long-term resident of both Virginia Beach and Seaboard NC where he and his wife retired to their dream farm. He was a man of many talents, including vegetable farming and wood-working, crafting items for his family such as a playhouse, a doll's crib and benches made from a pecan tree struck by lightning.
Douglas served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1966.
He was a member of the Masons, both Bayside and Seaboard branches, and the Seaboard Lions Club. He served as a deacon at the Seaboard Baptist Church.
Douglas was pre-deceased by his beloved wife, Georgia, and seven siblings. Surviving him are his brother, Harold Lafayette (Mildred) and his sister, Myrtis Shearouse (Perry); sons, Douglas Burgsteiner (Robin) and Dwayne Burgsteiner (Deborah); and daughters, Virginia Winco and Linda Blanchard (David).
Also surviving him are his grandchildren Kelli Tillson (Travis); Allen Winco (Rosie), Brian Winco; Joelle Flood (Ryan) and many Burgsteiners - Cody (Karla), Timothy, Brianna, Kendra, Kyle, Joshua, Kourtney, Hallie and 14 great-grandchildren.
His family wishes to thank Bernice Moore, his primary caretaker whose kindness they greatly appreciated, and Natasha Jenkins.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 20 at Hollomon-Brown, Bayside. Visitation will start at 10 a.m. A reception will follow at Douglas's Virginia Beach home. A private burial will be held later in Seaboard.
