Portsmouth - James Garland Gainous, 65, passed away Friday, August 23, 2013. He was born in Roanoke Rapids, NC, a U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran and excelled in commercial construction following his military service. He retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a shipwright in shop 64 and became a professional truck driver unitl retiring fully with Whit Williams, Inc. in 2006. . He was a lifetime member of the DAV and a former member of the Metal Trades Council. He is predeceased by his father, Talmon Gainous; a daughter, Christina Michelle Gainous Martin; and a sister, Linda Katherine Buonfigli.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Joyce E. Gainous; his mother, Helen Gainous Bales; daughter, Angie "A.J." Roberts and her husband Mark of Chesapeake; a son, Donald R. Gainous of Erfelden, Germany; two sisters, Sandra Brown and Karen Sanders Finch; a brother, Wayne Gainous; four grandchildren, Brittni Michelle Martin, Robert Andrew Martin, Jr., Samantha Brook Roberts and Zoe Renee' Roberts; and one great grandchild, Branson Andrew Horton.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, August 27, at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel by the Rev. Gene Primm. Burial will follow in Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veteran Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
