James Thomas Doughten, Sr.

Chesapeake - CPO James Thomas Doughten, Sr., USN (Ret.), age 94, passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2014 in his home.

Born in Decaturville, TN, he retired from the U.S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer in 1962 after 30 years of service and from Newport News Shipbuilding in 1982. He was a member of Oaklette United Methodist Church, V.F.W., Fleet Reserve Association and Doric Masonic Lodge #44 A.F. & A.M. He was a veteran of the World War II serving on USS New York. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and a devoted family man.

Left to cherish James's memory are his wife of 63 years, Doris M. Doughten; daughter, Gail M. Smith (Phillip) of Chesapeake; son, Jerry W. Doughten, Sr. (fiancée, Diane) of Chesapeake; daughter-in-law, Lora Doughten of Virginia Beach; sister, Martha Borgardt of Port Charlotte, FL; five grandchildren, Dawn, Michael, Jerry, Jr., Rebecca and Cathrine and five great grandchildren, Devin, Zachary, Mason, Landon and Rylan. He was preceded in death by a son, James T. Doughten, Jr.

The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014 from 3 to 5 p.m. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, 2014 at Oaklette United Methodist Church, 520 Oaklette Drive, Chesapeake, VA 23325. Entombment will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made to Oaklette United Methodist Church. Condolence may be offered to the family at:
