Jason A. Smallwood
Como - North Carolina Army National Guardsman, Spc. Jason Allen Smallwood, 24, assigned to the 883rd SAPPERS based in Winston-Salem, passed away at his home in Como, NC, November 5, 2012. He was born April 7, 1988 in Norfolk, VA, and was a graduate of Gates County High School. Jason grew up working alongside his father at J.S. Structural Repair. He was a proud Soldier, recently promoted to the rank of Specialist during a nearly year-long-tour where he was assigned to the 881st Engineer Support Co., working route-clearing missions, ensuring the safety of others on the dangerous roads in Afghanistan. While deployed, he earned numerous accommodations to include the Purple Heart with Merit, Combat Action Badge, and the North Carolina Army National Guard Commendation Medal. A friend to many and loved son, Jason is survived by his father, Julian "Jay" Smallwood, Jr.; stepmother, Marie Smallwood; brother, Julian C. Smallwood, III; sister, Claudia Renee Long; and many other relatives. A funeral service will be held Saturday, November 10, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Parr Funeral Home & Crematory, 3515 Robs Dr., Suffolk, VA 23434 with Rev. Lee Nagy and Chaplain (COL) Philip Glick officiating. Burial with full military honors provided by the North Carolina Army National Guard will follow at Holly Lawn Cemetery. Friends may join the family Friday night from 7-8 p.m. at the funeral home for a time of visitation. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his name to T.A.P.S. at www.taps.org.
