Virginia Beach - Mr. Joseph Howard Whichard, 88, passed away on August 11, 2012.
The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, August 15, 2012 at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home/Lynnhaven Chapel, 3600 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach, VA 23452.
Mr. Whichard was born in Martin County, NC and moved to the Hampton Roads area in 1946. He lived in Norfolk and later Virginia Beach with his family.
Mr. Whichard served in the US Army during WWII and fought in Europe. He was wounded at the Battle of Hurtgen Forest, near Hurtgen Germany during Nov. 1944. He earned the following decorations and citations: European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with One Bronze Star, Purple Heart with One Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal and the American Defense Medal. He obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant.
He married Mildred Virginia Dunn of Watertown, TN in 1945. She preceded him in death in 1996 and he later married Jeanette Watrous of Virginia Beach in 1997.
After returning from the war, he worked in Hampton Roads in the construction and custom millwork industry for more than 35 years. He was employed by Trailer Coach Corp., Burton Lumber Co., R. F. Trant Co., and Premier Millwork. For a time, he owned WW Millwork in Chesapeake, VA. He was a member of Kings Grant Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and was active in the Kings Builders Mission Program. He was a member of The Knights of Pythias and is a Past Grand Chancellor - Virginia, he coordinated the senior golf group at Redwing Lake Golf Course for several years and he was an avid gardener.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanette W. Whichard, his children - son Eddy H. Whichard and Eddy's wife Dee of Lancaster, VA, daughter Janice W. Barber and Janice's husband Sheridan of Virginia Beach, VA, grandchildren Russell Whichard, Scott Whichard, Ryan Barber, Mindy Camp, Amanda Whichard and Emily Partlow, 7 great grandchildren, brother - Linwood Whichard, sisters - Leona Cherry and Margaret Nelson and 20 nephews and nieces.
