Virginia Beach - Kenneth Boyd Riedel, 78, passed away on Wednesday, Oct.10, 2012 in a local hospital. Born in Bayport, Minnesota, he came to the Tidewater area at age 3 and was the son of the late Dorothy and Burton Riedel.
He was a graduate of Maury High School, Class of 1952 and attended O.D.U. Ken served 28 years in the Army National Guard. He attended OCS, was qualified in both field artillery and missile defense, and retired as a Captain. In 1995, he retired after 40 years in outside sales. After Ken retired, he was active in Friends of the Third Battalion, Twenty Ninth Division Association, Ruritan Club, was Treasurer of Virginia Beach Photo Club, Vice President of Norfolk Division Alumni, president of the Sunrise Senior Bowling League, member of the Portsmouth Sports Club, and "The Maury Guys". Ken was a member of Thalia Lynn Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, was chairman of the Senior Adult Activities, and was in charge of the benevolence committee assisting the community in a food give-away program to help the needy and homeless.
Ken was also an active member of the Norfolk Sports Club since 1988. He served as Sergeant-at-Arms and was the recipient of the Joe Brown Memorial Award as the Outstanding Norfolk Sports Club Member in 2001. Ken was the Club's photographer for all the activities for nearly 20 years and did an excellent job in organizing the Jamboree program book each year. He served many years on the Scholarship Committee and was the "Trip Captain" for all the Redskin trips. In 2003, he was recognized at the Past President's breakfast with a special award for service. In 2005, Ken was again recognized for outstanding work in program layout, photos and printing preparation for the 60th Annual Jamboree book. Ken has worked on many committees such as the Reverse Raffle, Special Olympics and the Jamboree Committee. Ken and his wife, Doris, attended all club activities and events of the Norfolk Sports Club.
Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife, Doris French Riedel; two daughters, Karen Fay and husband, Martin of Orwigsburg, PA and Diane King and husband, Andrew of Virginia Beach; three grandchildren, Meredith and Rachel Fay, and Austin King; and a brother, Burt "Sonny" Riedel of Virginia Beach.
A funeral service will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14 at Thalia Lynn Baptist Church, 4392 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach, with Dr. Prentis McGoldrick officiating. The family will receive friends at a visitation at the church one hour prior to the church service, and a reception will follow in the church social hall. Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 15. in Rosewood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Norfolk Sports Club, P.O. Box 12501, Norfolk, VA 23541. H. D.
