Lilburn T. Hummer Jr.|
Virginia Beach - In the 96th year of his life, Lilburn T. "Sonny" Hummer Jr. died on Feb. 3, 2014. He was born on Aug. 24, 1918, in Lake Providence, LA, to Lilburn T. Hummer, Sr. and Stella M. Ramsay Hummer. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, F. Virginia Owens Hummer, by his parents and by brothers, George R. Hummer and Douglas D. Hummer.
He is survived by his son, G. Gary Hummer (Cheryl) of Chesapeake, grandson, Andrew T.C. Hummer (Sarah) of Keller, TX, step-granddaughter, Jennifer Forrest Meekins (Todd) and step great-granddaughter, Genevieve of Horseheads, NY, sister, F. Jeannine Brochu of Virginia Beach, two special daughters Isabel R. Mathews and Carmen R. Lomas of Virginia Beach and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was a kind man to whom family meant everything. He never had an unkind word to say about anyone and will be sorely missed by his friends at the First Colonial Inn.
He grew up in Russellville, KY and after graduating from Russellville High School he joined the U.S. Navy which brought him to Norfolk where he met and married Virginia Owens in 1939. He became part of the Owen's family, and his mother-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Owens, nick-named him "Sonny" which stayed with him for his entire life.
He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. Between these wars and for the rest of his working career he served as a civilian employee of the Department of Defense until he retired in 1973 from his last position of some 15 years as Deputy Comptroller of Naval Air Station Norfolk, Va.
A funeral service will be conducted by Reverend Robert Randall at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8th. The family will receive friends after the service for a reception. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 9.
