Obituary Condolences

Nicholas J. Pope
Norfolk - Nicholas John Pope, Jr. 94, Commander USN, ret, of Norfolk Virginia died on November 19th, 2012. He was born in East Chicago, Indiana on July 7th, 1918 where he met his wife of 65 years, Helen McMahon. He joined the Navy in 1940 and flew over 400 combat missions in the Mediterranean and Atlantic while stationed in North Africa serving under Paul "Bear" Bryant. After the war, he continued to serve in the Navy as a public relations officer until his retirement from active duty in 1964. A wonderful writer and gifted interviewer, Nick continued his career with a public interest show on NBC affiliate, WAVY-TV where he also served as Public Relations Director. In addition, he held the position of Public Relations Director at the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority and also worked for the Virginia Opera Association.
Nick was educated at UCLA, where he played football and Oglethorpe University. After beginning his Naval Aviator career, he longed to marry Helen McMahon, his hometown sweetheart who was a Navy nurse stationed in Corona California. He flew to California where he proposed marriage that resulted in a Rose Bowl wedding and they have been inseparable ever since. Together they enjoyed collecting antiques and attending mass, having family gatherings every Sunday and dancing to the music of their youth. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who always put family first. He was so loved and will be so missed.
Nick was predeceased by his children; Mari Anne (Marnie) Pope, Nicholas John Pope III, and John Randolph Pope. He is survived by his wife, Helen, his sons, Timothy McMahon. (Nancy Hayes.), and Peter Coman. (Karen Pierce.) five grandchildren, Timothy McMahon Jr, Nicholas Randolph, Brittny Anne, Mary Anne, and Emily Marie, and his daughter-in-law, Nancy Davis. In addition, he is survived by his older sister, Virginia, her children and one great-nephew.
We would like to thank the wonderful caregivers at Province Place for their care and love during this time.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 6400 Newport Avenue Norfolk, at 11:00 on Saturday, the 24th of November. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. H. D.
