Virginia Beach - Okey Townsend, 83, born in Vincennes, IN to Okey and Gertrude Townsend on November 12, 1929, died in Virginia Beach on January 14, 2013. He is predeceased by his dear wife of 58 years, Luella, and son, Stevan A., formerly of Virginia Beach.
Okey proudly served in the United States Navy, enlisting at age 17 and retiring with 25 years. His Naval career took him from one coast to the other and to various continents. Okey was a graduate of the University of Washington, earning a degree in electrical engineering while participating in special program offered by the Navy in the late 1950's. Among his many honors and commendations, he received special recognition while serving abroad the USS Enterprise in 1968 during the Vietnam War. Upon retiring from the Navy in 1970, Okey and "Lou" were resident curators of Upper Wolfsnare Plantation in Virginia Beach. He also worked with Q.E.D. Systems as a technical consultant on large computers for the Navy. A major career change came in 1982 when he worked with the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office in Virginia Beach for six years. Okey enjoyed researching the genealogy of his family, volunteering at a local library, learning to play the piano, cheering on those Redskins, but most of all, travelling with Lou, especially to Ireland.
A memorial service, conducted by Reverend Lauren Ramseur, will be held on Friday, January 18, 2013 at 3pm at Lynnhaven Colony Congregational Church - United Church of Christ at 2217 West Great Neck Road in Virginia Beach (23451).
