Portsmouth - Richard Davis "Dick" Mattox, 87, died Sept. 24, 2013. He was a retired lawyer and a member of the Virginia State Bar for 55 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Mattox graduated from The College of William and Mary and the T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond. He was a former president of the Norfolk/Portsmouth Bar Association. He was president of Olive Branch Little League for 13 years. He also coached the Hodges Manor Redskins Pop Warner football team. He was the 1973 Sportsman of the Year at the Portsmouth Sports Club and a founding member of the Float Fishermen of Virginia. Mr. Mattox was a member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Barbara Crafts Mattox; three daughters, Beckey Mattox and life partner Sue Maurice of Coinjock, NC, Barbara Lakey and husband Walter of Chesapeake, and Susan McNair and husband Mike of Moyock, NC; two sons, Richard D. Mattox, Jr. and wife Debbi of Midlothian, and David B. Mattox of Portsmouth; longtime friend and adopted family member, Dwight Spivey of Chesapeake; a sister, Annie Grace Phelps of FL; eight grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 1 PM at St. Andrews United Methodist Church, 5615 Portsmouth Blvd., Portsmouth, VA. by the Rev. Dan Phillips Abbott. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Sturtevant Funeral Home on Friday from 7-8:30 PM.
