Norfolk - Roland Edward Campbell, 84, affectionately known as "Unk" by many family members and friends passed away on Monday, April 21, 2014.
Born in Winston-Salem, N.C., Unk loved his God, church, his mother, family, his country and military. He was a lifelong resident of Willoughby Spit except when his 30 year Navy career kept him away. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of Korea and Vietnam. He graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1947 and was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church since 1934.
He was predeceased by his brother, Charles B. Campbell and a sister, June Campbell Thompson, both of Norfolk.
Left to cherish Unk's memory are his nephews, Donald Thompson and wife Gwen of Norfolk, Va., Kent Campbell of Fairview, N.C. and Charles Campbell of Eastville, Va. and nieces, Linda Meehan of Washaprague, Va., Debbie Horstman of Virginia Beach, Donna Thompson of Bangor, Maine, Lucinda Thompson and Belinda Thompson, both of Norfolk.
The family wishes to thank Evelyn Osborne for her years of support and companionship to Unk as well as the staff of both Lake Taylor Hospital and Province Place for taking such good care of Unk.
The family will receive friends at Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Monday, April 28, from 10 to 11 a.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, April 28, in the church sanctuary by Rev. Fr. Daniel Beeman. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com
