Walter D. Carter Obituary
Walter D. Carter

Norfolk - Mr. Walter Dwight Carter, 88 entered into eternal life on Saturday evening, May 3, 2014 at Commonwealth Memory Care, Norfolk.

Walter was born July 16, 1925 to Gladys Mae Howard Carter and Clyde Hampton Carter of Kannapolis, NC.

He attended McKeever School in Kannapolis until age 9, when he moved to Mocksville, NC after the passing of his parents. Walter was raised by his grandparents, Minnie West Carter and John Wesley Carter. There he attended Cooleemee School.

A WWII veteran, he served in the U.S. Navy until 1945. He met the loved of his life, Helen Louise Carter from Richmond, VA and married May 24, 1944. Helen passed on August 17, 2012 after a long illness with Alzheimer's. Walter worked for Exxon Mobil at The Norfolk Terminal for 38 years, retiring in 1985. He continued to meet quarterly with the Retiree Club.

He loved golfing, working on his collection of Corvair's and helping any and everyone. He also loved Nascar and Baseball.

Walter attended Oceanview Baptist Church locally, but remained a member of his childhood family church, Liberty Methodist in Mocksville, NC.

He and Helen never had children, however they were parents to so very many neighborhood children, and were very active in the lives of 5 young nieces, when Helen's sister, Irene was widowed.

Walter was a member of the Tidewater Corvair Club, where he has served many leadership roles. The men in this club have been unbelievably supportive to him during the past 3 years he has been unable to participate.

He never met a stranger, and he loved everyone he met!

Walter has two siblings, Ralph Wesley Carter of Mocksville, NC who passed into eternal life in 1977 and Pauline Carter Deal of Salisbury, NC. He leaves nieces and nephews who all adored him.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Commonwealth Memory Care, Carollee Shouse, John Gilliland, Smitty Smith, Linda Perales for all the care and love you have showed Walter over the past 3 years.

The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 from 3 to 4 p.m. The funeral will follow at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel.
