CINCINNATI: William H. Jones (Bill) passed away peacefully on October 29, 2013 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Bill leaves his wife, Sally, as well as three daughters: Judy Pryor (Roger) from the Villages, Florida; Janene Chavis (James) from Maineville, Ohio; and Leslie Bricker (Mark) from Cincinnati, Ohio; he leaves a brother, Gerald, from Sacramento, California; Bill also leaves seven grandchildren: Christopher Pagan, Sheridan Pagan, Roger Pryor Jr., Blake Chavis, Brian Chavis, Caitlyn Chavis land Mark Bricker Jr. he leaves two great-grandchildren as well: Brennan Pagan and Saja Pagan.
Bill was born in Ironton, Ohio on September 8, 1921. He spent most of his childhood in Huntington, West Virginia. Bill graduated from St. Joseph School and from Marshall University in Huntington, where he was student body president his senior year.
Bill served in the army during World War II as a foot soldier, private first class. He received two bronze stars for valor in the European Theater.
In 1946, he began his career as a chemist with Firestone in Pottstown, PA. Later, Bill worked for General Tire in Jeanette, PA and Esso in New York City. After almost half his life, Bill joined Chrysler Corporation and moved to Catawba Island, OH.
He spent 42 years as a member of the Catawba Island Club, where he and Sally enjoyed golfing with friends. He was an historian who loved collecting, studying, and restoring antiques. He also loved to travel, and particularly enjoyed visiting England and Ireland. Bill was a voracious reader, especially enjoying historical fiction and thrillers. Bill also enjoyed hosting guests at his home often. Friends looked forward to their annual Kentucky Derby Party.
Bill remained a loyal fan of his sports teams since the Phillies success as the Whiz Kids of 1959. The Pittsburgh Steelers was his NFL team. He wore their black cap proudly.
A gathering of family & friends will be from 10-11am, Saturday, November 02, 2013, in the Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, 216 Washington St, Port Clinton, OH, followed by the funeral service at 11:00am. Interment will be in Catawba Island Cemetery, Port Clinton, OH, with a military graveside service conducted by the V.F.W. Homer D. Gardner Post #2480.
