Quarles Ashley Bashaw, 85, of Stewartville, passed away peacefully, his family by his side, Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, of natural causes at Seasons Hospice in Rochester, where he had been a resident the past two weeks.

Quarles Ashley Bashaw was born Feb. 23, 1928, in Richmond, Va., to Thomas and Virginia (Henley) Bashaw. He grew up in Richmond attended school there before enlisting and serving two years in the U.S. Navy. Following his discharge, he returned to Richmond where he finished and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School. He attended the University of Richmond where he received a degree in English literature. Ashley worked at the Life Insurance Company of Virginia, where he met his wife Joan M. Aswegan. They were married on Jan. 24, 1959, in Stewartville. They made their home in Richmond and various East Coast states before moving their family to Stewartville in 1969. They were later divorced. Ashley was employed at the Stewartville Lumberyard for a short time, before his employment with the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier in Rochester, for 20 years until his retirement.

He was a member of the American Legion and the National Association of Letter Carriers. He enjoyed gardening following local and national politics, current events and doing crossword puzzles and going for rides with his dog.

"The greatest gift we ever received came from God, we called him Dad." Our dad taught us everything we needed to know although we may not have listened all of the time! He was passionate about everything he did especially debating current events with friends and family and his wonderful garden. He gave us all of his love and his life, because for him family and particularly his children and grandchildren were the most important things to him. Now you are our angel, Dad, so spread your wings out wide and please wrap them around us whenever you see us in need or missing you. We are proud to say you were our dad, the greatest man we ever knew. We will see you again — the day will come and we'll hold you dear and never be apart.

Ashley is survived by five daughters and two sons, Jennifer Bashaw of Rockville, Md., Tom (Barb) of Andover, Matt (Danette) of Byron, Susan (John) Bromen of Eagan, Mary Bashaw of Rochester, Anne (Tony) Meyer of Stewartville and Carole Bashaw of St. Paul; 12 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter; his brother, Berkeley Bashaw; and nieces, Renee and Shiree Bashaw all of Richmond, Va.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Sue and brother, Waverly.

His family would like to thank the staff at Seasons Hospice for their patient and loving care and also the staff at Pine Haven Nursing Home.
