Virgil Norton, 91, of Eau Claire, Wis. passed away on Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire.

He was born in Luck, Wis., on Dec. 18, 1922, to Claude and Louise (Pedersen) Norton. The family moved to Mantorville when he was five, where he lived until he graduated from high school. In 1942, he joined the Marine Corps. He served in the Pacific and was wounded in the Battle of Tarawa for which he received The Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged in 1944. He attended Mankato Teachers College while working part-time at the post office. He later went full time at the post office. While working in Rochester and Eau Claire, Wis., he worked his way up to Postmaster. He retired in 1978 and then started working at U.S. Bank from 1980 to 1995. After that, he retired for good. On May 31, 1946, he married the love of his life, Connie Hodge.
Virgil is survived by his four children, Terry (Wendy) Norton, Linda (Max) Myers, Romelle (Rick) Smrcka and Steve Norton. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, his sister Leota Sims, numerous nieces and nephews, and his best four-legged buddy, Dusty.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Connie, two sisters and one brother.
Virgil loved to go hunting and fishing. In his younger days, he had a farm and had Shetland ponies. He loved all animals. He especially loved spending time at his trailer on the lake in Hayward, Wis. He had many fun-filled days up there.
He will be dearly missed by friends and family.

Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2014, at Chapel Heights United Methodist Church, 300 E. Hamilton Ave., Eau Claire, WI 54701. Pastor Cheri Miskimen will officiate.
Visitation will take place at the church on Saturday an hour prior to the service. Committal service with military honors rendered by American Legion Post 92 will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 28, 2014, at Grand View Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Rochester.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Virgil's name to Chapel Heights UMC.
