Herbert Nelson Obituary
Nelson, Herbert C.

Herbert Carl Nelson passed away at Island Shores, Neenah, WI on March 25, 2014. Herbert was born to Oscar Edwin and Alice Otilla "Tille" Nelson in Prentice, WI on April 24, 1920.

Herb completed his elementary and high school training at Prentice, graduating with honors in 1938, and then entered the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in the fall of that year. He graduated from River Falls in June 1948 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education, majoring in Science (Physics) and minoring in mathematics and music. At that point, his education was interrupted by World War II. Following the war, he enrolled at the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis and obtained Bachelor of Science and Master of Science Degrees in Civil Engineering with saturation in open channel (river) hydraulics and mathematics, and was elected to Chi Epsilon, a civil engineering honor society.

After a short period of employment with consulting engineering firms and a three year term of teaching at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, Herb accepted the position of Hydraulic Engineer in Research and Engineering at Kimberly-Clark Corp., Neenah. He spent the next 32 years with that organization and retired in 1985 at age 65 from a career that was challenging, rewarding, and rich in experiences.

One highlight of that career was his leadership of the team of scientists, engineers and technicians that developed a forming process for the first tissue making paper machine to achieve sustained manufacturing speeds above a-mile-a-minute, 5300 feet per minute. Even now, 40 years later, that is still considered high speed for a paper machine by the whole paper industry.

Herb was active in church activities throughout his life; first at First Lutheran in Prentice; then at Ezekiel Lutheran in River Falls; Good Shepherd Lutheran in Duluth, MN; Prince of Peace Lutheran in Brookfield, CT; Desert Hills Lutheran in Green Valley, AZ; and at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Neenah. At various times he served as choir member, usher, council member, and committeeman.

On March 18, 1944, he and Marjorie Vivian Thomson of River Falls were married in Baltimore, MA.

Herb is survived by his wife Marjorie, of 70 years; a daughter, Mary Hooper and her husband Edward of Neenah; son John and his wife Audrey of Longmont, CO; and son Gerald and his wife Judy of Edgar, WI. There are eight grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held for Herb at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, 809 S. Commercial St., Neenah, with Rev. Catherine A.K. Mode officiating. A light lunch will follow. Friends may call at the church from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Our Saviors Lutheran Church for use in their music program.
