Zarling, James P.

James (Jim) P Zarling, 80, of Omro, passed away on Friday, February 28, 2014 at home with his family at his side, from complications of COPD.

Jim was born on February 27, 1934 in Oshkosh WI, a son of the late Paul H and Essie J. (Hubbard) Zarling. He married Marianne Broege on May 23, 1981 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Ripon WI. Jim was honorably discharged after serving in the U S Navy from 1951 to 1955 and in the Navy Reserves from 1955 to 1957. He served on the USS Leyte and the USS Hornet during the Korean Conflict.

He was employed as a welder for many years, having worked for Stelzner Mfg, Jay Mfg, and Basic American Metals. After retirement he was employed part time by New Haven, Inc., a job he dearly loved. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, baseball, football, watching TV and playing practical jokes. He relished the times he spent with anyone who came to visit him, especially his grandkids. He was an arm chair coach for the Green Bay Packers and an expert TV remote operator.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 33 years ( they said it would never last) Marianne; sons, Larry S. (Mae) Zarling, Oshkosh WI , Michael J. (Judy) Zarling , Chadsworth, CA, Tom (Cathy) Broege, Oshkosh WI, Brett Broege (Patricia Banda- Katch), Menasha WI; daughters, Michele Mertz(Ameen Al-Ghetta) Jackson, WY and Wendy (Brian) Fisher, Pickett WI. He is further survived by his sister, Mona Kienert, Oshkosh WI; brother and sister- in-laws, Ralph & Lisa Viergutz, Chula Vista, CA, Milt & Kay Viergutz, Marshfield, WI, Judy & Don Gustin, New London, WI, Florine & Dean Goulet, Colfax, WI, Janice Krueger, Schofield, WI, Donald Viergutz, Colby, WI, Julie & Richard Birkholz, Medford WI, Richard Bergman, Marathon, WI, Sandra Viergutz, Allegan, MI and Gloria Knippel, Schofield, WI. Also surviving are 19 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren plus 2 more soon to be, many nieces and nephews and dear friends and his little constant companion, Scooter.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sons Kenneth and Gary Zarling; sister, Lila Ware; sister and brother-in-law, Bonnie & Howie Barnes; brother, Larry N. Zarling; brothers and sister-in-laws, Robert & Carolyn Viergutz, Gerald Viergutz, Janet Bergman, Vinlea Viergutz; nieces Sandy Lawler, Holly Brown and McKenna Frenkel; mother and father-in-laws, Emil Viergutz and Donald & Esther Clark.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, March 6, 2014, at the funeral home from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and then again on Friday, March 7, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor David Nothem officiating. Burial will follow in the Waukau Cemetery.

Our family wishes to thank Dr. Lance Zernzach, Dr. Steven Wilson, Dr. Al-Bitar and Dr. Al-Nouri and their nurses for their continuing care throughout the years and all our relatives, friends and neighbors who have shown so much care and concern for Jim and our family during this difficult time. A special thank you to Heartland Hospice (especially Sheila and Sierra) for making Jim's final days very enjoyable and comfortable.
