LaVerne A. Herzfeldt, age 89, Dale, died on Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at Kindred Hearts in New London. He was born on December 26, 1923, in Waupaca, WI, the son of the late Herman and Leda(Behnke)Herzfeldt. On September 20, 1952, LaVerne married Marcella Bucholtz. She preceded him in death on September 21, 2001. LaVerne served his country in the US Navy. During WWII he sailed on a merchant ship where he travelled the world, and was proud to say that he crossed the Atlantic Ocean 8 times. In recent years, he was able to travel to Washington DC with the Old Glory Honor Flight. LaVerne was a member of St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church in Dale, where he was a former chairman and treasurer. He worked for Tusler Pontiac, and then was employed by Foreway Express for 27 years, before retiring. LaVerne was a member of the Dale Fire Department, where he served as Fire Chief for 15 years, and was also a member of Hortonville American Legion Post 55. He also served as the Dale Town Constable for many years. LaVerne enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, snowmobiling and bowling. He loved spending time with his family and grandchildren, working in his garage, and riding in his ARGO ATV. LaVerne is survived by two sons, David(Bev), Hortonville and Glen(Margie), Little Chute; five grandchildren, Mark(Christina), West Bend; Brian(Amy), Madison; Eric(Katelyn), Kaukauna; Amy and Scott, Little Chute; two great-grandchildren, Aubrie and Drew, West Bend; a sister, Marcella(Edgar)Bartelt, Appleton; a sister-in-law, Carol(Robert)Magdanz, Pine River; three brothers-in-law, Don Buchholtz, Weyauwega; Maynard Knapp, Hortonville and Robert Merrill, Kaukauna; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Grace Fielding and Ramona Armstrong, a brother, Ronald Herzfeldt, and three sisters-in-law, Viona Buchholtz, Bernice Knapp, and Margie Merrill. Funeral service will be held on Friday, October 18, 2013 at 11:00 AM at St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church, N926 Dale Ave., Dale. Rev. William Finn will officiate. Burial with military rites will be in Dale Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday(TODAY) from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Lewin Funeral Home, Fremont, and on Friday, at the church, from 9:00 AM until the time of service.
