Obituary Condolences

Age 66, of North Apollo, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 28, 2014, at the Center for Compassionate Care and Hospice in Lawrenceville, surrounded by her family and friends. She was born in New London, CT, to William R. Harbert and the late Wilma Olson Harbert. Darlene was a 1965 graduate of Scott High School in North Braddock, and a proud graduate of Penn State University. A resident of Apollo and North Apollo for 43 years, she was a Health and Physical Education teacher in the Apollo-Ridge School District from 1970 until her retirement in 2007. Darlene was an advisor to the S.A.D.D. Club, gymnastic shows, and various student activities as well as serving as the girls' basketball coach for a few years. Her dedication to her students, fellow faculty, and supportive staff members was always apparent and evidenced by their outpouring of support during her heroic battle to defeat pancreatic cancer. A member of St. James Roman Catholic Church, Darlene loved her Lord and always worked hard to foster good relationships and help others in any way she could. She was a truly devoted mother and grandmother as well as a loving aunt and relative within her family. A member of the Red Hat Society, she shared the friendships and love of its members with great joy. Darlene enjoyed music of all kinds, attending concerts and the theater, movies, dancing, gardening, and game shows which tested your knowledge. In addition to her father, Darlene is survived by her husband of 44 years, Robert C. Darby; daughter, Shannon N. (Joseph) Christof of Ben Avon; son, Sean B. Darby of North Apollo; granddaughters, Greta and Ainsley Christof; brother, William (Connie) Harbert of Richmond, VA; as well as nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and nephews. Friends will be received in the CURRAN - SHAFFER FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY, INC., 100 Owens View Ave., Apollo, on Thursday, April 3, 2014, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday, April 4, 2014, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, April 5, 2014, at 12:00 noon at St. James R.C.C., Apollo. Memorial contributions may be made in Darlene's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude's Place, Memphis, TN 38105 and Apollo-Ridge School District, Education Foundation, P.O.
