DOLORES COYNE DIERCKS

Obituary Condolences

DIERCKS DOLORES COYNE
Died on February 14 in Seattle, WA. She is survived by her son, Jerry Diercks; daughter-in-law, Deb Prince; and countless family in the Labuda clan. Dee was born in Pittsburgh in 1931 and grew up in Latrobe, PA. She attended Mount Mercy College, now Carlow University, in Pittsburgh where she studied nursing and singing. She received her Masters in Nursing from Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, OH and pursued singing and other post-graduate studies at Ohio State University. Dee started her career with the Visiting Nurse Service in New York City and later worked in psychiatric nursing. She enjoyed telling stories from her time in the neighborhoods of NYC and working in various psych. wards. (Dee often said the sanest response to some situations was to go crazy). Her nursing career evolved to include school nursing in the vast deserts of Eastern New Mexico, and then teaching at Washington Hospital School of Nursing and Waynesburg University in PA. The last leg of Dee's career brought her to nurse management at Butler Memorial Hospital and volunteer work with several organizations in Western Pennsylvania. As dedicated to nursing as she was, she also pursued her interests and talents in music for most of her life. At Ohio State University, she sang in the University Choir where she met her husband, Louis Diercks, (1902-1991). Dee was a progressive thinker and she surrounded herself with smart, interesting people. She rarely shied away from challenging the status quo when there was an opportunity to make a situation more just or a way of doing things more effectively. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in the name of Dolores Coyne Diercks to the Carlow Fund, Advancement Office, 3333 Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213 or at www.carlow.edu.
