75, of Lyme, NH, passed away at home on the afternoon of Saturday, August 10, 2013. Joe was born on August 20, 1937 to the late Joseph Francis and Mary Winifred (Browne) Daschbach in the Carrick neighborhood of southern Pittsburgh, PA, where he lived until graduating from St. Wendelin High School in 1955. He studied at the University of Notre Dame, graduating Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in 1959. From 1960 to 1964, he served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. He met the love of his life, Eileen O'Reilly while he was stationed in Newport, RI, where they were married on June 29, 1963 at St. Mary's Catholic Church. After receiving a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1968, Joe joined the New Hampshire bar and, for over 40 years, was an attorney who enjoyed an active general law practice based in Lebanon, NH with an emphasis in civil litigation and later in mediation and arbitration. He was an early adopter in the field of alternative dispute resolution and was certified as a NH Superior Court mediator in 1990. He also served as a NH District Court Judge for 25 years in the Hanover and Lebanon, NH district courts. He was a member of the New Hampshire and Vermont Bar Associations; the Association of Trial Lawyers of America; a member and director the New Hampshire Trial Lawyers Association; and a member and president of the Grafton County Bar Association. Joe served for more than ten years as a Director of the Dartmouth National Bank and was dedicated to serving the community through his extensive pro bono legal work. He was also a member of the Board of Overseers of Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center; President and Trustee of Lebanon College; Director and Board Chair of United Developmental Services; and a member of the Crossroads Academy Board of Trustees from 1997 to 2000. He was an active member of St. Denis Catholic Church in Hanover, NH, where he taught religious education and served as a lector and president of the parish council. Joe loved living in the Upper Valley with its rich cultural life and stunning natural beauty. He was an avid skier, hiker, sailor, fisherman, gourmet cook, gardener, conversationalist, and Notre Dame Football fan. He was also a life-long student of literature, religion, and philosophy. He enjoyed participating in many book clubs and was particularly engrossed by the work of French historian, literary critic, and philosopher of social science, René Girard. Joe is survived by his wife, Eileen (O'Reilly) Daschbach of Lyme, NH; his children, Mary Daschbach and her spouse and daughter, Gabin and Ella Assouramou of San Jose, Costa Rica, Ellen Daschbach of New York, NY, and John Daschbach of Tokyo, Japan; and his sisters, Barbara Noble, Elinor Metz, and Lois Keating. There will be no calling hours. A memorial mass will be celebrated, Saturday, August 17, 2013, 11:00 a.m. at St. Denis Catholic Church in Hanover, NH. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery in Lyme, NH, followed by a reception at Dowd's Country Inn in Lyme.
