LOU MAMMONE

Obituary Condolences

MAMMONE LOU
Former Pittsburgh resident, Lou Mammone, 99, passed away on December 28, 2012. Since retirement, Lou has been a resident of Pompano Beach Florida. Lou was born on October 21, 1913 in Mongiana, Italy to Angelo and Raffaela Timpano Mammone. Shortly before Lou's birth, Angelo left for America to find work like thousands of other Italians who dreamed of a better future for their family. While Angelo established himself in this country, WWI broke out, delaying his ability to reunite with his family. In 1925, Angelo was able to return to Italy and Lou, at the age of 12, met his father for the first time. The family settled in Beaver Falls, PA where Angelo and his brothers-in-law (Timpano) operated grocery stores. Unable to speak the language, Lou had to start over in the first grade at 12 years old. Lou earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1938, where he was a member of the marching band. In 2011, he was honored as the oldest living Pitt marching band alumnus. While attending Pitt, he met the love of his life, Gilda Capuzzi, his wife of 60 years. Lou served his country during WWII where he was deployed to the Philippines and later Japan. Lou and Gilda had two children, Louis E. and Margherita "Peggy". His career was always in the food business where, along with his son, they operated a successful food brokerage and wholesale Italian food business, Pittsburgh Cheese Terminal. Lou was a long time member of Churchill Valley Country Club and was proud of his golf game, claiming three holes-in-one. In retirement, he enjoyed golfing, traveling, and spending time with friends and family. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Louis E. and Jean Hald Mammone of Champion, PA; daughter and son-in-law, Margherita and William Lockwood of Hazelton, PA; brother, Alfred Mammone of Beaver Falls, PA; sister, Mary McCallister of Beaver Falls, PA; grandchildren, Michael, Edward, Susan, Jeffrey, and Samantha; ten great-grandchildren; and many close friends of the Sea Monarch in Pompano Beach. Lou was preceded in death by his wife, Gilda; and his brother, Rudolph. Friends received at the GENE H. CORL, INC. FUNERAL CHAPEL & CREMATION CENTER OF MONROEVILLE, 4335 Northern Pike, (1 block East of Mosside Blvd.-Rte. 48). Visitation Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013 from 2-4 and 7-9.
