CIANCUTTI MARK A.
Formerly of Wilkinsburg, PA, died November 19 at his home in Ithaca, NY, from complications of ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). He wsa 64. He was born May 29, 1948 in Pittsburgh, to the late Louis and Laura (Kuhlmann) Ciancutti and grew up in Arnold, PA. He moved to Warminster, PA, and graduated from William Tennent High School. He attended Carnegie-Mellon University, graduating in 1970 with a B.S. in math, and earning master's degrees in math from the University of Michigan in 1971 and in Industrial Administration from Carnegie Mellon in 1973. After studying accounting at Northwestern University, Mark worked in that field for the firm of Arthur Young (now part of Ernst & Young) before returning to Pittsburgh in 1975 to begin graduate work in statistics at Carnegie-Mellon. That year Mark joined the university's Shotokan karate club, and continued to practice and teach karate for some 35 years, achieving the rank of third-degree black belt and becoming club leader. After receiving his Ph.D. in statistics in 1981, he spent another 30 years as a professor at Robert Morris University, teaching mathematics, calculus, and statistics at both the Pittsburgh and Moon Twp. campuses. In 2006 he married Anne Carson of Ithaca, NY, the couple having originally met in 1975 in the Carnegie-Mellon karate club. He is survived by his wife; his stepdaughter, Catherine Price; his brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Christine Ciancutti of Folsom, NJ; and his nephews, Ronald Basehore of Toms River, NJ, and Paul Michael Ciancutti of St. Augustine, FL, and their families. A memorial service is planned for March 2013, to be held at Robert Morris University.
