MARY "BABA" (BARAN) FERKO CIHOTA Obituary
FERKO CIHOTA
MARY "BABA" (BARAN)
In her 90th year, early Sunday morning, August 10, 2014, called home to her beloved Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary. Born a U.S. citizen in Slovakia in April 1925, Mary came to McKeesport in 1946 with her mother to rejoin the rest of the family following the end of World War II. Here she learned English at night and served lovingly as a nurses' aide at McKeesport Hospital for more than 30 years. She met her beloved Andy Ferko, a returning GI from the war, at a Slovak club dance. After a brief courtship (Andy told friends after the first dance that beautiful Mary Baran was the woman for him), they married and were blessed with one daughter. After 24 loving years of marriage, Andy was taken home to the Lord. Later, Mary married John Cihota, a family friend and widower with four children. She became loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother to an extended family. Her reputation as an excellent Slovak cook and baker was well earned and widely appreciated. Dear mother of Rita Ferko Joyce (Patrick) of Robinson Twp.; and grandmother of Jesse of New York City and Matthew of Washington, D.C., with whom she made her home for nearly 30 years; loving stepmother of Sister Jeanne Marie Cihota, OSBM, of Phoenix, AZ, the late Patricia Cihota of Florida, John (Laurie) Cihota of Pensacola, FL, and Mary Lynn (Joseph) Rebholz of Pickerington, OH); and loving grandmother to Brian (Catherine), Jason (Kate), and Annette Rebholz, and John (Terry), Jerry (Holly), Diane, and Tom (Kristie) Cihota, and Natalie (Ryan) Heitman; and 13 great- grandchildren. Mary survived her parents, George and Anna Baran; two wonderful husbands, Andy and John; and all her siblings, John and Joseph Baran, Anna Macus, and Rose Spak. For many years until recently, Mary was a daily communicant at Holy Trinity Parish (Robinson), and a faithful member of the Ladies Guild and the Rosary group. Friends and family will be warmly received at JOSEPH M. SOMMA FUNERAL HOME, INC., 5405 Steubenville Pike, Robinson Twp., on Wednesday, August 13, 2014, between 2:00 and 8:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial Thursday, August 14, 2014, beginning at 10:00 a.m., Holy Trinity Church, 5718 Steubenville Pike, Robinson Twp., Principal Celebrant Bishop David Zubik.
