1951 - 2013 | Obituary Condolences
Age 61, of Alexandria, Virginia, passed away in his home on Sunday, August 4, 2013. Born in McKeesport on September 14, 1951, he was the son of the late John J. and Margaret (Maksin) Wargo. He was a graduate of Saint Joseph School in Clairton and Clairton High School, and he received a Bachelor of Science in Earth and Planetary Sciences and a Doctor of Science in Materials Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Afterward, Michael both taught and performed research at MIT, before joining NASA in Washington, DC. He served as Chief Exploration Scientist for NASA's Human Exploration and Operations Mission and was a leading contributor to NASA's human lunar and planetary exploration program. In his nearly two-decade career at NASA, he received numerous awards, including NASA's Exceptional Service Medal and seven group achievement awards. He is survived by his wife, Adele Morrissette, of New York, New York; brothers, Dr. John J. Wargo of Clairton, J. David Wargo (Mary Trezza) of New York, New York, and Robert T. Wargo of Clairton; nieces, and many beloved cousins. Friends and family will be received in the EVERLY-WHEATLEY FUNERAL HOME, 1500 W. Braddock Road, Alexandria, VA 22302 on Sunday, August 11, 2013, from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 12, 2013, at 12:30 p.m. in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, also in Alexandria, Virginia. Interment will be private. A memorial service will be held at a later date in the Pittsburgh area.
