Obituary Condolences

86, of Saint Augustine, Florida, died January 11, 2013. He was born April 23, 1926, in Boonville, Indiana, the oldest son of the late Harold Forest Samples and Hazel Pearl Grandstaff Samples Marshall. Gene was happily married to his devoted wife, Virginia A. Derr for nearly 63 years. Gene served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. During his service he attended University of Notre Dame in the V-12 Program. He graduated from New Mexico School of Mines in 1950. He earned his Executive MBA from Columbia University in 1970. He was an icon of the mining industry for over 40 years, serving as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of both Consolidation Coal Company and Arch Minerals Corporation. During his illustrious career, he maintained many professional affiliations including the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical & Petroleum Engineers, the National Coal Association, and the American Coal Foundation. Gene's many contributions to the coal industry were recognized through an honorary Ph.D. from the New Mexico Institute of Technology, the Distinguished Pennsylvanian Award, and the Distinguished Service Award from the Alumni Association of the New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology and in 1994, the dedication of the Samples Mine in West Virginia. He is survived by wife, Virginia; two siblings, Donald Samples and Janet Samples; four children, Ronald E. Samples II and wife Judith, Rebecca S. O'Connell and husband Daniel, Thomas H. Samples and wife Anne, Susan S. Kaper and husband Thomas; and 11 grandchildren, Erin, Dustin, Emily, Sarah, Adam, Eric, Abigail, Evan, Nicholas, Joseph and Michael. A Memorial Service was held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Glenmoor Retirement Community in the World Golf Village, Saint Augustine, Florida. Sign the online guestbook at:
