SHIRLEY A. "JEFF"
Age 93, of Friendship Village of South Hills, died Wednesday, June 11, 2014. He was the beloved husband for 71 years to the late Jean Slaughter Davis, whom he married the night of his graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy on June 9, 1943. He is survived by two sons, Jeffrey S. (Patricia Ann) of Williamsburg, VA, and John S. (Sue Gove) of Mt. Lebanon, PA; two daughters, Julia B. Davis (Max Forgey) of Cape Coral, FL, and Janet B. Forton (Kevin) of Scott Twp, PA; five grandchildren, Scott and Kevin of Ashburn, VA, Mara of Cape Coral, FL, Shelby of the U.S. Air Force and John of Scott Twp.; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Following graduation from the USNA in 1943, Jeff attended an orientation program in Naval Aviation. He then joined the USS Maryland BB46 in the Pacific Theater where he served until WWII ended. He began his career with US Steel Corp. in 1947 until he was recalled into active duty from 1951-1953 where he served on the staff at the US Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI. He then rejoined US Steel Corp. at Fairless Works and in 1972 joined a team of engineers and consultants in Madrid, Spain to assist in the design and construction of a steel plant. In 1974 he joined the Engineering Dept. of US Steel headquarters in Pittsburgh until his retirement in 1982. Jeff was a life member of the US Naval Academy Alumni Association and the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers. He was a licensed Engineer in Pennsylvania and was a long time member of the Bethel St. Clair Rotary Club. During retirement he volunteered for many organizations, including the Carnegie Museum, the Friends of the Upper St. Clair Library, the Westminster Presbyterian Church and activities at his retirement community of Friendship Village of South Hills. Arrangements entrusted to BEINHAUERS, (724-941-3211). Inurnment will be in Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Scott Township Public Library, 301 Lindsay Drive, Scott Township, PA 15106. Please add or view tributes at:
