Obituary Condolences

Age 79, of McCandless Township, died unexpectedly, Tuesday, July 29, 2014. Born and raised in Lakewood, Ohio, he was the son of the late Sterling and Eleanor Farmer. Sterling was the loving husband of the late Hon. Elaine Frazier Farmer, his wife of 42 years and a five-term state representative for the 28th district. He was an Army veteran, having served in Germany at the end of the Korean War. He graduated from Case Institute of Technology in 1960 and enjoyed a 31-year career with U.S. Steel at several locations. An avid golfer, Sterling was a member and former director of Shannopin Country Club, where he was getting closer and closer to shooting his age. He remained active in retirement as a volunteer tax preparer for North Hills Community Outreach, and was a loyal Steelers season ticket holder since the opening of Three Rivers Stadium. Sterling is survived by his daughter, Heather Hoak and her husband, Chris, and their son, Frazier; by his son, Drew Farmer and his wife, Kelly; brothers, Brent and Bob Farmer; a close-knit group of cousins, and his companion of many years, Ruth Stirling. Sterling was a positive, kind gentleman who will be missed by all who knew him. He will be in our hearts and minds forever.
