1931 - 2014 | Obituary Condolences
Age 82, of Plum, passed away on Thursday, May 22, 2014, after enduring several health problems for many years. He was born October 6, 1931, in Windber, PA, a son of the late Howard and Gertrude Berkey. Bill served in the US Navy from 1951 to 1955 on the aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea. After his discharge, he entered IUP where he met Ellie, his wife of 55 years, where they were both students. He earned his BS and his MA degrees. While at IUP, he served as president of Student Council in 1957 and as vice-president of his 1959 class. Health reasons caused him to retire from his teaching position in Penn Hills in 1990 and he began a walking regimen. Three seasons of the year he spent much of his time outdoors walking, gardening, motorcycling, playing golf and displaying his creative crafts at exhibits and festivals. He won many awards for his exquisite silver jewelry and his whimsical sculptures made from flatware and kitchen utensils. For 25 years he was a dedicated walker in Boyce Park. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor (Lesko) Berkey; and his three children, Lori Berkey-Stack (Hank Stack), Nora Berkey-Campbell (Tom Campbell) and Bart Berkey (Terri Fisher-Berkey); also six grandchildren, Andrew Stack, Alex Stack, Michael Campbell, Courtney Campbell, Max Berkey and Alexa Berkey; his sister, Joyce Simcoe; and many nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to attend a brief outdoor Memorial Service on Monday, June 16, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. on the patio of the Boyce Park Ski Lodge. Arrangements by the MAURICE L. KNEE, LTD. FUNERAL HOME.
