David LeRoy McGary Obituary

David LeRoy McGary, 92, of Rexburg, died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, at Ashton Living Center surrounded by his family.

He was born June 16, 1921, in Shelley to David McGary and Esther Louise Staples McGary. He grew up in a large family in Shelley, where he attended school until he joined the U.S. Marine Corps on Jan. 2, 1942. LeRoy was proud to serve his country in World War II and gave four years of service and was honorably discharged. While in the military he learned his life trade and became a mechanic. He served four campaigns in the South Pacific with the 2nd Marines in the engineers.

Upon returning home, he and his first wife, Dorothy Mae Gardner McGary, were among the first group of people to be married in the newly opened Idaho Falls Temple and had five children. They divorced after 35 years of marriage.

He would later meet Relda Nef Huskinson at a singles dance in Idaho Falls. They were married Nov. 1, 1980, in Idaho Falls. The couple then moved to Rexburg, where he worked as a mechanic for Erickson Pontiac for about three years before retiring at age 63. He would then become well loved as a crossing guard at Adams Elementary School for another eight years.

LeRoy enjoyed the outdoors by spending time with his family camping, fishing and boating. LeRoy also enjoyed working around the house as a hobbyist, primarily woodworking. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held numerous church callings.

When asked about the most important thing he ever did, LeRoy responded, "To raise a family." Between LeRoy and Relda, they now have nine children, 24 grandchildren and 48 great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Relda McGary; and his children, Dennis (Carolyn) McGary of Beaverton, Ore., Larry (Clarice) McGary of Hemet, Calif., Robert (Mary) McGary of Irvine, Calif., and Betty (Vince) Harrison of Ucon; stepchildren, Linda (Bob) Marshall of Belgrade, Mont., Elaine (Sid) Summers, Alan (Judy) Huskinson and Kirk E. (Kari) Huskinson, all of Rexburg; his siblings, Don McGary of Basin City, Wash., Dwain (Margaret) McGary of Fallbrook, Calif., Jennie McGary of Shelley, Gerald (Doris) McGary of Idaho Falls and Alvin (Wanda) McGary of Leominster, Mass.; and their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Carol (Dalynn) McClaskey; two brothers, five sisters, two granddaughters and a grandson.

The McGary family would like to thank the Ashton Living Center for their care and kindness.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8, at the Rexburg LDS North Stake Center, 314 E. Second North, with Bishop Richard Cluff officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg and from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Friday prior to services at the stake center. Interment will be in Burton Cemetery with military rites by the Madison County Veterans and the Idaho Honor Guard.
