In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. He was discharged in 1945.

Jim married Margie Williams on July 26, 1946. She died in March 1994. He married Beth Reese in March 1995, and she died in June 2008.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Elks Club and was a supporting member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Jim enjoyed fishing, golf, crossword puzzles, spending time with his family and caring for his cats.

He is survived by his daughter; Tonya Claybaugh; and stepdaughters, Janice (Tom) Dixon, Kathy (Bob) Dansie, Nancy (Ted) Whyte and Candis (Mike) Bischoff; 20 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
