John Berky Obituary

John Alvin Berky Jr., 87, of Rigby, passed away Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.

John was born March 8, 1927, in Oaklyn, N.J., to John Alvin Berky Sr. and Katie Margaret DeLong. He grew up and attended schools in Pennsylvania.

John married Patricia Black on Sept. 23, 1950, in Pennsylvania. They later divorced.

He later married Colleen Delia Call on June 15, 1973, in Wyndmoor, Pa., and they were sealed in the Washington D.C. LDS Temple on Oct. 23, 1973.

He served in the U.S. Navy for 12 years during WWII and during the Korean Conflict. After his honorable release, he attended Temple University in Philadelphia and earned a bachelor's degree in microbiology. With his degree, John worked at Chestnut Hill Hospital in Philadelphia for 25 years.

John was an active member of the LDS Church. He was active in the Scouting program. He served in the bishopric in Jarrettown, Pa., and in the High Priest Group. He served a mission in the Idaho Falls Temple Family History Center and he served a full-time mission with his wife in Louisville, Ky.

He enjoyed gardening and golf. He served on the board of directors for the Rigby Senior Citizens Center.

John is survived by his wife; his two daughters, Kim (Perry) Christensen of Spanish Fork, Utah, and Brenda (Joe) Baker of Oxford, Mass.; son, Gregory (Patti) Berky of Bellfont, Pa.; sister, Yvonne (Herb) Koeger of Doylestown, Pa.; two brothers, Ralph (Georgia Anne) Berky of Pennsylvania and Gene (Marilyn) Berky of Conshohocken, Pa.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, two sisters and two sons.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, April 28, at the Rigby LDS Stake Center, 258 W. First North in Rigby. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Eckersell Memorial Chapel and from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Monday prior to services at the church. Burial will be held at Rigby Pioneer Cemetery.
