Samuel Hyrum Winters, 86, passed away peacefully Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, at his home in St. Anthony surrounded by his family.
Sam was born July 25, 1927, in Chester, Idaho, the son of Thomas Erving Winters and Beatrice Campbell Winters. He grew up in the Chester area, where he received his elementary schooling, and attended high school in St. Anthony.
He quit high school to volunteer for military service in the U.S. Army at age 17. He re-enlisted and was sent to Korea, where he was wounded in action Sept. 18, 1950. He was honorably discharged June 9, 1952.
He married Marlene "Molly" Rae Smith of Ashton on March 9, 1953, in St. Anthony. They made their home in St. Anthony, where they have since resided. They went south for the winters.
Sam enjoyed camping, fishing and whittling wood. Most important to him was spending time with his family.
Sam worked for Yellowstone National Park for several years and ran heavy equipment and retired from the Fre-mont County Road and Bridge.
He is survived by his wife, Marlene "Molly" of St. Anthony; a daughter, Shawna (Scott) Mace of St. Anthony; a son, Rondo Winters of Rexburg; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Vollie Winters; two brothers, Bill and Theron Winters; and a daughter-in-law, Michele Winters.
Funeral services will be conducted at noon Monday, Jan. 20, at Bidwell Funeral Home in St. Anthony. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Wilford Cemetery.
